The Washington Commanders have signed Daron Payne to a four-year, $60 million contract extension with $60 million guaranteed.

Payne recorded career highs in sacks (11.5) and tackles for loss (21) last season. Among defensive tackles, he was third in sacks and second in tackles for loss.

Payne, 25, played college football at the University of Alabama, where he was a dominant force on the defensive line. He was a two-time All-SEC selection and was named to the All-American team in 2017. Payne was also a key player in Alabama’s national championship win in the 2017-2018 season.

In 2018, Payne was drafted by the Washington Commanders in the first round of the NFL draft, 13th overall. He made an immediate impact in his rookie season, starting all 16 games and recording 56 tackles and five sacks. Payne has continued to be a key player on Washington’s defense, earning recognition as one of the top young defensive linemen in the league.
