In a surprising move, the Toronto Blue Jays have traded fan favorite Teoscar Hernández to the Seattle Mariners. The Blue Jays receive righty reliever Erik Swanson and lefty prospect Adam Macko.
Hernandez, 30, appeared in 131 games last season, batting .267 with 25 home runs, 77 runs batted in and an OPS of .807.
Hernandez played on a one-year, $10.65 million deal in 2022 and is arbitration eligible. He hits unrestricted free agency following the 2023 season and that is likely the reason he was traded. A long-term deal could not be worked out with the Jays.
