History of the Washington Commanders

The Washington Commanders (formerly known as the Washington Football Team and previously the Washington Redskins) are a professional NFL team based in Washington D.C. The franchise was established in 1932 as the Boston Braves and then changed its name to the Boston Redskins in 1933. In 1937, the team moved to Washington D.C. and became the Washington Redskins.

The Redskins enjoyed success in the 1930s and 1940s, winning two NFL championships in 1937 and 1942. They also had a strong team in the 1970s, led by Hall of Fame coach George Allen and quarterback Sonny Jurgensen. The team reached the Super Bowl in the 1972 season but lost to the Miami Dolphins.

In the 1980s, the Redskins became one of the dominant teams in the NFL under the leadership of head coach Joe Gibbs and quarterback Joe Theismann. The team won three Super Bowl championships in 1982, 1987, and 1991, and established a reputation for a powerful offense and a hard-hitting defense.

However, the team’s fortunes declined in the late 1990s and 2000s, and they struggled to maintain consistency on the field. The team went through a series of coaching changes and ownership controversies during this time, and fans began to express concerns about the team’s name, which many Native American groups found offensive.

In 2020, after years of controversy, the team officially retired its former name and became known as the Washington Football Team. The team played the entire 2020 season without a permanent name or logo, using a temporary design featuring the team’s colors and uniform number font. In 2022, the team announced that it would be changing its name once again, this time to the Washington Commanders. The new name took affect at the start of the 2022 NFL season.
